Photo A Day
I just finished a Photo-A-Day project with some of my Flickr/Twitter friends. Great fun, it got me out shooting, and I learned a lot from my fellow photographers. You can see my shots here, or the whole group here.

Bored? Spare time on your hands? I get it. Go here: Flight Path, the LA aviation museum. I love this place, there are historic stewardess uniforms from the last 80 years. A vintage DC3 you can go in. Anything and everything aviation-oriented. And admission is free. You’ll want to spend hours here.

And the ultimate LA aviation restaurant? Proud Bird. Aircraft replicas in the back yard. Watch LAX flights takeoff/land. Listen to air traffic on the headsets. And, best of all, amazing food and wonderful staff. Since 1967. http://www.theproudbird.com/
And let me just get started on the food trucks in LA. Twitter along with me. @BarbiesQ

My buddy Craig Johnson gave a funny speech at the Library of Congress National Book Festival. It’s always a pleasure to hear Craig speak.
If you haven’t read his books, you should. Start with The Cold Dish, then read the rest. Wonderful.
The same guy delivers the NY Times and the LA Times in my neighborhood. Most of the time, he’s on time. If my paper’s missing, I can look down the hill and see if there are papers in any other driveway (if not, he’s running late. If so, he skipped me). And, if I get one paper but not the other, he’s forgotten a paper.
Yesterday NYT, si, LAT, no. Call LA Times. No human option, you have to go through the automated process. I report the missing paper, request a replacement, they say it’ll be there in 45 minutes. Five hours later I go out and buy a paper.
This morning, same thing. This time I try the LA Times website, request a replacement. About an hour later, my gate rings. I’m in the shower, don’t answer it. The dogs go crazy barking. Silly dogs, it’s just someone ringing the gate, it’s not like they’re on our property. They keep barking, I go downstairs to check, and the new dog, Stella, apparently has never seen me with a towel on my head. So now she’s barking at me, big dog Johnnie’s barking at her barking, and this just wasn’t the tranquil Saturday morning I had planned.
A few minutes later I’m leaving, and…there’s an LA Times at the bottom of my driveway. The only way it could have gotten there is if the guy climbed my fence and walked down the driveway towards the front door. I’m guessing he spotted the big dog, dropped the paper and took off.
What was the thought process that assumed I’d be glad someone CLIMBED MY FENCE to leave a paper by my door? If he was concerned I wouldn’t get it, throwing it over the gate would work just fine. If he wanted to talk to me, breaking and entering is never a good way to start a conversation.
I can’t wait to see what happens tomorrow morning. One thing for sure, the big dog’s coming with me when I pick up my paper(s). Just in case.

My favorite piece by Louis C.K.
Enjoy!
Now there’s a website that keeps track of all the gourmet food trucks in Los Angeles. A year ago we didn’t need this, but we do now. http://findlafoodtrucks.com/
It’s going on three months since I adopted Stella. I know she had a hard life. I’m expecting it to take a little while for her to come out of her shell. But still. It has been three months.

This is Stella happy. This is Stella sad. This, i’m afraid, is Stella.
The pet psychic said she wanted a plush soccer ball. I got her one, but she won’t play with it. Until everyone else is out of the room. I can hear her upstairs, running and rolling around, but as soon as she hears me coming she stops.
Still Stella. Three months and counting.
For the next ten days or so, I’m one of the guest bloggers on the Photoshop World Conference Blog.
Photoshop World is a huge convention of photographers, designers, and anyone else who uses Photoshop. There’s a big tech expo, too. And a few parties. It’s my yearly visit with my people, the photography/computer geeks. And, of course, it takes place in Las Vegas. Of course.
You’re a Conroy fan or you’re not.”Great Santini?” “The Prince of Tides?” “My Losing Season?” Yeah, he’s sentimental and emotional and maybe he overwrites. And I’m not sure any of that is bad. If I want an emotional, sentimental journey, wonderfully written, Conroy’s my guy. This book is no exception. You care about the (many) characters, in the vivid setting of Charleston. Big book, well done.
